MTV’s TJ (Twitter Jockey) Contest: Social Media Game Changer?

August 10th, 2010  |  Published in Facebook, Featured, Social Media, Twitter  |  1 Comment

Every brand is realizing the power of Social media and the publicity opportunity that a brand can achieve by doing a social media reality show (UGC contest). MTV (Music Television; in-case you have forgotten the original name) decided to test social media and wanted to get someone who can be a liaison between the hulk at MTV and the masses in the 144 characters micro-blogging gig. Being MTV it launched a Talent Hunt (Reality contest) in form of a live show entitled Follow Me: The search for the First MTV TJ, MTV crowned its first-ever Twitter Jockey (TJ). MTV invited candidates to battle it out in a series of online challenges followed by five finalists competing  at a live show on Aug. 8. Fans will then pick who gets the new job.

The TJ winner will be working on the Video Music Awards in September and appear on MTV from time to time.

Being MTV they used this opportunity to drive home good publicity from this initiative:  The program form the day of its launch garnered all kinds of headlines, ranging from theAP’s “Forget the VJ: MTV is looking for a Twitter Jockey” to OC Weekly’s “MTV Wants To Be Relevant Again, Seeking Twitter Jockey.” and many more.

The winner of TJ challenge is Gabi Gregg, a 23 year-old plus-size fashion blogger from Detroit. Gregg, who tweets as @gabifresh and now as @mtvtj, bested her four competitors by winning the popular vote from viewers and fans in last night’s final elimination round.

MTV’s lively new Twitter Jockey will be moving to New York and officially starting her new $100,000 position next week. Until then, you can watch Gregg’s winning moment in the MTV clip embedded below.

Wish you all the best Gabi Gregg

This is a very interesting point of view. Your blog is refreshing, but I wish one could find more content, though. I am looking forward to reading more from you. Keep up the good work. thanks.
